It never fails. Every single fall I use decorating as my therapy. Could be the back-to-school chaos that throws our house into a tizzy or the suddenly packed schedule that makes us feel spread thin or the up-and-down weather changes that do weird things to our moods around here…
But whenever I need a moment to decompress, there’s just something about decorating for fall that sets things right again.
Today, I’m joining in with Krista from The Happy Housie and a group of DIY / home decor blogger friends to share our mantels all gussied up for fall, if you’ve been craving the decorating down time too. You can see all of their creative ideas at the bottom of this post.
My current view as I write this is this fireplace. It’s the first day that it has actually felt like fall.
So I’m sitting here chatting with y’all, sipping my salted caramel coffee, and listening to the rain and our town’s church bells outside while I thank God for this roof over our heads.
I still can’t believe that my view looked like this just over a year ago:
It’s amazing what a couple of gallons of paint, some brick limewash, a DIY window seat for hidden electronic storage and some good ol’ sweaty hard work can do.
Decorating this mantel is always a bit more challenging than most because of this big ol’ honkin’ TV smack in the middle of it. It’s the only TV we own in the entire house, and above the fireplace was really the only spot for it.
Plus, having those sconces in the way throws in an extra hurdle.
But it’s nothing a couple of $3 eucalyptus bundles from Trader Joe’s can’t fix.
I found these pretty painted terra cotta pots for around $12 each in Marshall’s while out shopping with my mom the other week, and they were just perfect for tying together a hint of autumnal orange with the blue/gray hues in the rest of our living room.
I keep these lanterns hanging out on our hearth year-round because they’re so easy to change up with the seasons. If you stick a pumpkin on top of a stack of books, it counts as fall, right?
Sticking to the simple classics with a wardrobe capsule for your decor is handy like that.
A few birch logs cozy it up a little bit too.
Other than the tiny bit of orange terra cotta, I’m really keeping the fall decor neutral this year. I’m officially full term this week in my pregnancy, and the last thing this mama feels like messing with is disassembling fall leaves and pumpkins all over the house in November to make way for a new season.
Eucalyptus solves everything. Eucalyptus always understands. 
And if I remove the few little pumpkins I have, it could work for any time of year.
