Antique Banister Wall Planter

Oh my stars, y’all! We have something hanging on our wall!  I know… it’s the little things that thrill us these days at the new house.  In this case, it’s wall decor.

Since going paint crazy in the living room, breakfast nook, dining room, and laundry room (more on that space later), I was really itching to hang something on those freshly painted walls.

The other week, my mom and I went junking and I found these two chippy antique banisters for practically a song.  I had no clue what I was going to do with them, but they were just too interesting to pass up.  And they seemed like the perfect Trash to Treasure Tuesday kind of project, which I’m finally jumping back into today after a 2 month hiatus during our move.  (If you don’t know what T2T Day is, a few blogger friends and I take trash or thrift finds and transform them for our homes. Their makeovers are at the bottom of this post. You can see all of my past Trash to Treasure projects here if you want some thrifty ideas.)

While I was planning our breakfast nook, it finally hit me… a wall planter!

If you ever happen upon a pair of banisters, bundle of spindles, or a couple of old ladders, I whipped up a quick tutorial for you to make one yourself.

To stop the chipping on the banisters and preserve the aged paint, I gave them a quick couple of thin coats of the clear matte acrylic.

Then, Robert and I hung them up on the wall using the wall anchors (since they’re not on studs), D-rings, level, and power drill.

When I was on the hunt for some planter hooks, I discovered some on sale at Crate and Barrel that ended up being cheaper than Walmart. (What? When does that ever happen?)

I originally planned on getting some cheapo terra cotta clay pots and whitewashing them to look aged, but could not for the life of me find any that were the right size for the planter hooks.

These cement pots ended up being the perfect size but were a little more expensive than I’d planned on spending.  Buuuut they’re cute.  So it’s still a win, I guess.  My junk find just wound up being pricier than I thought it would be.

While I was in IKEA recently picking up our living room furniture, I snagged these artificial sage and lavender plants.

I can’t get over how real they look for around $6… and I don’t have to worry about keeping them alive, so there’s that.  They wouldn’t have a prayer living in our dark window-less breakfast nook where they’re hanging now anyway.  (If you don’t have an IKEA near you though, these are really cute too.)

Since the pots are a tad heavy, we secured the planter hooks with wall anchors.  I love how much they’ve brightened up our breakfast nook! Like a total breath of fresh air with all those cozy textures going on.

I’m restraining myself a little bit with super rugged, distressed things in this house, but there’s a certain elegance to this one that marries the farmhouse look with the more formal style in this house with those curvy details on the banisters.

Pretty soon, I’ll be sharing my big plans for the breakfast nook, but this is certainly one of those projects that sets my wheels turning with more ideas.

This breakfast nook was so black and white before, so I love that it’s feeling much warmer with this punch of greenery right when we walk through the back garage door.  It’s, thankfully, still shallow enough that we don’t bump into it when we walk in.

One thing’s for sure though, I’ve never seen anything like this project before, not with banisters at least.

I can’t wait to share what else is happening in this spot very soon!  It’s going to be very classic, chic, French, rustic, relaxed, but elegant.  That’s probably a weird description, but I hope it’ll make more sense later.
