Winter Foyer Decorating Ideas

This post was written in collaboration with Kirkland’s.

Can we get all pinky-up fancy for this post?  And can we agree that the word “foyer” when pronounced “foy-yay” is way spiffier than just plain ol’ “entryway”?  Yes?!  Okay, good.

Because our “foy-yay” just got spiffed up for winter.

While I was shopping the post-holiday sales the other week, I found some goodies at Kirkland’s to give this spot a quick wintery perk that will transition easily into spring.  (Our weather here in South Carolina flip flops between freezing temps and 70 degrees this time of year anyway. Might as well join it.)

So here are some of my favorite winter foyer / entryway decorating tips:

  1. Hang a mirror to help bounce around light.

A couple of weeks ago, while Robert and I were taking down the Christmas decorations, I kept coming back to our foyer still with our Christmas-y burlap art hung up and thinking it needed a major refresh.  All of last year I had some DIY botanical art hanging in here, which I loved.

But the one thing that always bugged me is we didn’t have a mirror right beside our front door.  Ya know… to check and make sure you don’t have a massive piece of broccoli stuck in your teeth or anything before you run into half the people you know at the grocery store.  (Side note: Why is it you always run into old classmates in the store when you have on your rattiest gym clothes and no makeup?)

Hanging up these panel mirrors gave this space a little punch of farmhouse glam, don’t ya think?  They reflect the light from our dining room window beautifully to brighten up our usually gloomy and dark entry.

2.  Add cozy lighting.

Our old thrifted lamp that was about to bite the dust finally got replaced with this distressed cream lamp that looks and feels a lot like painted concrete in person.   Lamps are rockstars at creating that warm homey ambience.

3. Use candlelight for extra glow.

Even though I think this vase runner set is designed to hold flowers, I love how sticking candles in the tops have given this space an extra cozy feel.  I’ve done the same thing to my grandfather’s rose bud vases before.

I always miss the twinkly Christmas lights in January, so candles help me hold onto that little bit of glow.  I’ve already discovered after decorating our living room for winter this year how much happier Robert, Olivia, and I have been in comparison to last year’s no-winter-decor gloom with the help of a few candles.

4.  Incorporate greenery.

I went all plant lady to bring some life in here with leftover Christmas cedar garland, paperwhite flowers, and a boxwood wreath.  All fake of course… because no living plant ever makes it past a week in our house.

These are pretty convincing as the real thing though, huh?

5.  Add storage.

Under the table, I stuck a couple of baskets I scored for $7 each the other week and just filled them with birch logs we already had along with more artificial Christmas greenery.  And in the other basket, I threw in some hats, gloves, and scarves that we can grab on the way out the door on chilly days.

6.  Get creative with unexpected finds.

These ice skates I picked up at the thrift store for $4 seem to fit right in.

While I was out shopping at the flea market with my mom the other week, I found this antique windmill for a steal that I stuck on our front door as a makeshift wreath.  That perfectly worn rust just makes my heart go pitter patter.  It’s fun to find new uses for items that aren’t necessarily considered home decor.

I’ve mentioned it before, but I still can’t get over that this table was once a $50 Craigslist find.  And I was able to make the light fixture with this $20 metal sphere I found.

Every time we walk in the front door, it’s like being wrapped up in a warm blanket.  Coziness all over the place.

And fancy.  Don’t forget the fancy with an extra emphasis on “yay” in the “foy-yay”.  😉
