Blue Cottage Guest Bedroom Makeover Plans

Back in college, I got into a really big Old Hollywood phase.  I’d sing old musicals in the shower, wish people dressed like they did in the 40s, and wear pearls every chance I got.  And my dorm room was floor to ceiling black, white, and red with Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe all over the place. (I should have known then that maybe interior design was a good major.)

After graduation, when I moved back home with my parents as I got my teaching career off the ground, I poured that big Old Hollywood love of mine all over my childhood bedroom.  Literally poured. LOTS of red paint. Ack!

(Pardon the icky cell phone shots.)

Two years after moving back home, Robert and I got married and we moved into a teeny tiny apartment.  And a year later, we found out we were expecting our little girl.  Robert was still in college on the GI Bill and working another job, and we were already scraping by financially as it was with my small teaching salary.

But my mom and dad are the types who always leap into action when they’re needed, whether it’s their own flesh and blood or just a stranger on the street.  They truly are role models in marriage and parenting to Robert and I, and lately, I’ve been really excited about the thought of giving back to them for everything they’ve done for us.

I know we would not be in our current house if it weren’t for them opening their home to the two of us and our not-at-all-quiet newborn back in those days.

So now, I’ve come up with a design plan to makeover my childhood bedroom into a guest room for them.

My mom really loves all shades of blue and she has blue all throughout their house, so I’m incorporating plenty of it in here with light gray tones.  As luck would have it, a few little birdies have told me that blue is going to pick up a lot in home decor trends this year, so maybe we’re getting ahead of the game.  (But really… who cares as long as you love it, right?)

My parents recently just got rid of all of the furniture in this space besides the mattress, so I’m completely working from scratch in here.  (Affiliate links are provided below for convenience.)

  1. The bed:  We’ll be centering the bed on this big red wall (after it’s painted of course) to make the room feel more balanced.  And I’ll be making over a sleigh bed my mom found on Craigslist.  She’s always wanted a sleigh bed for as long as I can remember.
  2. Nightstands:  I found a pair of matching nightstands that I’ll be painting a pretty watery blue.
  3. Rug:  I LOVE this gorgeous rug I found on Overstock.  It’s still neutral with just enough color in it to keep it from blending into the carpet already in here (that ahem… I may have spilled nail polish on in my middle school years).  My mom’s taste is more traditional-meets-farmhouse, so the print works perfectly.
  4. Ceiling fan:  A fan is definitely on the must-have list for bedrooms around here, especially in the summer.  This one is just modern farmhouse enough without being too edgy.

5.  Above-the-bed art:  A piece of scripture or song, like this one, relating to guests or hospitality would be perfect since a lot of family who visit stay in this room.

6.  Bedding:  I’m thinking crisp white bedding would be great against all of the blues and would feel the most inviting. Jury’s still out on that one.

7. Dresser:  These small dressers and vanity once belonged to me, but they don’t hold a lot of storage, so I found a “new” one in a yard sale Facebook group for $20 that I’m finishing up now for this spot. I can’t WAIT to show it!

8.  Chair:  I’m hoping to find a good, inexpensive accent chair somewhere for a makeshift reading nook.

This bookcase between these two closets is Olivia Central.  When we visit, which is usually several times per month, the kiddo tosses toys all over the place, so great storage is a must-have.  This bedroom is also her room when she sleeps over for a grandparents weekend.

9.  Armoire:  I found a small armoire with great bones for $40 on Craigslist that would be perfect for hiding toys in drawers and storing extra bed linens and pillows for guests.

10.  Artwork:  Still figuring out some wall decor over here, but I’ll get there after we haul in the armoire.

11.  Windows:  Since the windows already have plantation shutters, we might just leave them alone, but I’m thinking some charcoal curtains could look really amazing too.  We’ll see what happens.

12.  Paint color:  Robert and I had some leftover playroom paint (Behr Seagull Gray), so it’s a great cool neutral for this room without having to spend anything (besides primer for that in-your-face red).

We still have more jobs on the to-do list of our own house, but I’m SO excited to take on another big makeover right now.  Some of y’all have asked what we’re going to do now that the house is mostly finished, but I promise, we’ll never run out of project ideas.  If anything, we have the DIY/decorating bug now more than ever.

What do you think of the plan so far?!  I’ll be sharing more of the progress over the next few weeks.
