It’s been a busy but productive 2 weeks since the last time I mentioned my parents’ guest bedroom makeover. Our garage is currently filled with furniture that’s halfway painted, I have a HUGE secret project happening that I’ll be announcing in a couple of weeks, oh and a little something else… WE SOLD OUR HOUSE! (Mainly because we’re ready to trade in our semi-cramped neighborhood for a little more land, trees, and countryside. We’ve missed that since Robert and I both grew up more in the country.)
If you’ve been following me on Facebook and Instagram, you probably already know I’m kind of freaking out. Robert and I originally put an offer on the “perfect” house last week, but we were competing against other offers and, unfortunately, ours didn’t win. So we have been searching all over for our next place but haven’t yet found “the one”. We’ll know it when we see it though, and we know God has big plans for us.
So a month-ish from now, we’ll either be living with my parents (again) for a little while or closing on a fixer upper or working with a builder on a new one. The suspense is killing me!
Anyways, so about that guest bedroom makeover, here’s the very first project going in it…
The other week, when I shared all of my ideas for my parents’ bedroom space, I’d mentioned that they really needed some storage to conceal Olivia’s toys and books since that’s where they keep all of the fun goodies whenever we/she visits. (Going to the grandparents’ house is always a party.)
I found this green armoire on Craigslist for $40 and couldn’t pass it up. It was a great size, the shutters on the front looked sort of farmhouse-y to me, and it could hide all of Olivia’s Barbies and Shopkins. (For real… who came up with Shopkins and whyyyy oh whyyyyyyyyy?)
The green was cute and all, but it wasn’t going to work with all of the blues I had planned for the room, so a quick paint job, wax, and new hardware did the trick.

- Fusion Mineral Paint in Plaster
- Fusion Mineral Paint in Linen
- Fusion Mineral Paint in Casement
- Homestead House Espresso Wax
- Cast iron hardware (I bought during a 50% off sale at Hobby Lobby.)
- Oh, and a paint brush and a rag might help.
Even though this piece was a cheap veneer cabinet that possibly originally came from a motel room, I wanted to make it look like it was some great antique find.
I painted the entire armoire (besides the top) with two coats of the Fusion Plaster color and to give it some depth with a bit of an aged look, I applied Espresso wax, leaving just a little in the corners and edges of the slats on the shutter doors.
And then the cast iron hardware popped beautifully against that creamy color.
For the top, to make it look like wood, I brushed on one coat of the Linen and let dry. I dry brushed a couple of layers of Casement, and then finished with a light layer of Espresso wax.
And then I did a happy little booty dance over how it turned out. With maybe an attempted moonwalk thrown in. (Ahem… huge emphasis on the word “attempted”.)
I love that it can now conceal Olivia’s toys on the bottom drawers and still has room for books and guest linens on the shelves.
The rest of this space is coming along pretty quickly. Oh, and in case you hadn’t noticed, that “Old Hollywood” dark gray and bright lipstick red that was here before is gone! (Thanks to my dad going all primer/paint crazy to get rid of it.)
College-aged me is very sad about it, but 2017 me is not at all heartbroken to see it go. The room already feels so much bigger just because of that one simple change.
So now that’s 1 piece of furniture down and uh… 5 more to go. I told you; it’s madness. I don’t know how, but our furniture projects always seem to come in waves.
