Welcome to the mullet summer party, y’all! The business in the front, party in the back kind.
Because right now, when you walk in through the front door, our foyer and dining room is all decorated for company, but if you walk past these first two rooms into the back of the house, it’s art projects and toy explosions and pool towels laid out to dry. True story.
Today, I’m so excited to be joining in with Gina from The Shabby Creek Cottage and a little group of incredibly talented home bloggers to kick off the season for the Summer Tour of Homes 2018!
For now, I’ll just show y’all the business part of the house.
And really, I planned on showing you more of our house on this tour, but I sprained my ankle instead. Hobbling around on one foot while pregnant with a camera in these two rooms was the most I could handle.
Anyways, welcome to our foyer! It’s the room that tells our guests when they first visit that we have our act together, but it’s lies. All lies. Our family of 3 may be small, but we’re wild and crazy on a daily basis, especially this time of year.
A couple of bunches of Trader Joe’s flowers helps me keep my cool in the midst of running around between the end-of-year dance recital, preschool graduation, school play, cookouts, birthdays, Mother’s Day preparations. May is always the month where I need a literal stop-and-smell-the-flowers moment most often.
But it’s a good kind of busy. The fun kind.
It’s so hard to believe that at this time last year this foyer had goldenrod yellow walls and not a lick of furniture or decor. But it was nothing some paint, a few IKEA frames, and a chest found on Craigslist couldn’t fix.

The dining room is still a slight work in progress with only a couple of items left on the t0-do list, but it’s a room that always means a special kind of day. We really only sprawl out around this table on weekends and holidays when we have our nearby families over after grilling out in the backyard.
We’re so thankful to live just a few minutes from Robert’s parents, my parents, and my grandmother, so family gatherings happen constantly around here, especially in the summer.
Our table was another cheap Craigslist find that we painted and built an oak tabletop for, and the rest of the room just sort of fell into place after that.
To prepare for this weekend, I set the table for Mother’s Day since Robert and my dad will be smoking a brisket for my grandmother, my mom, and me. (Any holiday where I don’t have to cook and can just play decorator… I’m down!)
Though I’ve gotta be honest… that apple pie isn’t going to make it to this weekend. 
And since we’re on the subject of moms, my mom and I set up this antique mirror gallery wall together a couple of months ago, and it might be my favorite project I’ve ever done with her. She was DIYing before DIYing went mainstream.

I’ll be sharing the rest of our house all done up for summer once Hop-Along Lauren heals over here… and I manage to deal with the toy explosion and pool towel situation. Survival mode, y’all. Survival. If you’re a mama and the month of May is kicking your booty too, we at least get this Sunday to relax, right? Maybe? Solidarity, sisters.
