Can you die from cuteness overload? Every time I walk into Olivia’s room I just want to spend hours and hours with her dancing and playing dress-up. Her bedroom makeover is officially finished!
Ever since putting the final touches in here, I’ve noticed story time has gotten a lot longer every night before bed. It’s so much more cheerful and comforting than it used to be.
This was what this space looked like up until a couple of months ago.
And this was the original plan (although we hardly ever stick to it 100%).
Luckily, the walls were already purple so she loved having a purple phase for a year until we could mosey on down to crossing this room off of our makeover to-do list.
But the $20 thrift store bed was rickety (on the verge of falling apart any day), the existing rug was stained with goodness-knows-what, and the entire room needed a perk-up.
So now here we are!

It helped that we hauled out a lot of the stuff taking up space too. It’s always so hard to know what to keep and what to sell/donate when you first move into a new house, so this makeover forced us to purge a lot once we figured out what Olivia really wanted to keep.
And I’m so glad we went with a slightly “big girl” route for the decor in here since we hope this bedroom set-up will last her 5-10 years well into middle school or possibly high school. She’s only close to 6 now, but I know the pre-teen years will be here before we know it.
Her one request though when I sat down with her to figure out what she wanted in this space was butterflies.
So I found this sweet kaleidoscope-look wallpaper with butterflies hidden in the pattern for a focal wall.
And I scored a cheap dresser on Craigslist to fix up and hung a butterfly shadow box above it.
The butterfly shadow box was just a 60% off shadow box I picked up at Michael’s with paper butterflies I printed, cut-out, and glued inside of the frame…
…along with some of our favorite keepsakes of hers like this rattle her grandfather carved for her, Robert’s first teddy bear, and a Shel Silverstein collection that she loves reading poems from almost every single night before bed.
Her one favorite thing from her bedroom in our last house that she wanted recreated was this DIY ballet barre. She’s obsessed! Honestly, I would be too. Former 5 year-old me is kinda jealous. 
To replace the old light fixture, I found this beaded semi-flush mount that worked perfectly as a makeshift chandelier for her 8 foot ceilings.
And to replace her on-the-verge-of-collapsing bed, I found this metal canopy bed on sale for $200 that she loves to use for building forts on the weekends. We drape quilts over the top and tie up sheets along the sides every Saturday night so she can have a tent for indoor camp-outs.
To spruce up her bedding, I found this chenille bedspread to use over her existing duvet for some added texture that wouldn’t distract too much from the busy wallpaper while also adding a little vintage feel.
I discovered the fun blush textured pillows at HomeGoods to work alongside this beaded butterfly pillow that Olivia picked out on her own (which sort of sparked this whole butterfly bedroom idea for her).
These nightstands were originally in our master bedroom, but we moved them into here instead since they worked so perfectly with her Craigslist dresser. They were a Craigslist find too that I fixed up with a lot of veneer patching and paint.
And her lamps were thrift store finds that I gave a quick makeover.
This little girl just finished her ballet recital this past weekend, but I have a feeling she’s going to keep on dancing throughout the summer in here. The girl never. stops. dancing. The grocery store, the parking lot, the playground- you name it and she’s dancing there.
It feels so good to have this space finished now that we’ve decided to unexpectedly take on a HUGE makeover in another room of the house (that I’ll tell y’all more about later this week).

So now that this space is done, the next kid space will be the nursery! I have a feeling that room will be a lot tougher for me to handle as this belly gets bigger, but I’m determined. (You can see some of the ideas I’ve been pinning so far here. Eek!)
Until then, I’m soaking up every minute of only-child life with my sweet girl as much as I can. She is so excited to meet her baby sister in October and is (hopefully) going to be a great little helper.
