I’m calling this the “catch-our-breath” summer. The summer with family reunions and road trips and yard work and home improvement projects galore. It’s so exciting and fun and totally worth the work, but there are evenings when I flop down on our bed and realize it’s the first time I’ve sat down all day. Whew!
Today, I’m joining in with Nina Hendrick again this year for her Simply Summer Home Tour with a group of insanely talented blogger friends. (You can see last year’s Simply Summer Tour here and this year’s summer tour of our current living room and breakfast room here, if you want more decorating ideas for the season.)
Welcome to our catch-our-breath space, our master bedroom.
It’s unexpectedly come together and practically decorated itself thanks to a lot of lucky finds.
In addition to the list of summer chaos, my camera and computer are having a fight, so my photos are a little wonky today.
(Affiliate links are provided below for convenience.)
Two months ago, this room looked like this…
Pretty crazy, huh?
Robert and I scored our bed, chest of drawers, and dresser on a major closeout at a local home decor shop, and everything else sort of fell into place.
We painted the walls in Benjamin Moore Moonshine, the ceiling and trim in Benjamin Moore Simply White, and the doors in Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron to flow with the rest of the house. The paint alone never fails to make a ginormous difference.
I did a little victory booty dance in the aisles of TJ Maxx when I found our bedding on clearance. And maybe I’m still doing a jig over here.
I scored the rug at HomeGoods the other day too and could not wait to get it home to gracefully slide it under our big bed (ahem… wrestle with it until red in the face and sweating like a pig).
This space really felt disconnected until that magical rug came along, and suddenly the room made sense.
To contrast with our light bedding, I snagged two pairs of charcoal IKEA curtains and hung them just below our crown molding to make the room feel larger.
This bedroom is much smaller than the bedroom in our old house, so hanging curtains high and wide trick the eye and make the ceiling look taller.
I love balancing out feminine and masculine details, so this pair of suitcases on top of our chest are rockstars at adding some rough, handsome texture while still providing storage, if we need it.
That top suitcase once belonged to my grandparents, who took it on their honeymoon over 60 years ago. Be still my sentimental lovin’ heart!
To trick the eyes a little more in making the room feel larger, I stuck this big mirror on top of our dresser to bounce some light around on this window-less wall. We brought it from our last master bedroom in our old house along with the rest of this decor I already had in my stash.
Fake flowers for the win, y’all! I forgot all about these little guys that were stuffed into a storage bin.
Robert and I are not bedroom chandelier people. We’re both hot-natured and love white noise in the room, so with this Channelside fan from Hunter Fan that we just hung up last week, we’ve been sleeping like rocks ever since. (Because really, how accurate is the term “sleeping like babies”?)
I love that the blades have that rugged texture to balance out the florals in the room and the lace on our bedding.
This Shakespearean Botanical book (that my former English teacher self is completely geeking out about) might end up by the pool with me this summer. Sleep is all I care about when I hit this bed at the end of every day.
