Just so you know… my decorating lately has had a theme song. “I’m blue da ba dee da ba daa da ba dee da ba daa.” Is my inner 90s kid showing? Did that song ever get stuck in your head for days on end?
Blue is having a moment in my life right now, I mean more than even before. And sometimes I wonder if I should branch out to other colors because I might be boring you guys with the constant use of my favorite hue. But at the end of the day, I always have to tell myself, “It’s my house, and I’ll decorate with what I love.” (I hope you do the same thing. Since you’re the one who has to live there.)
Maybe one of these days I’ll branch out, but with summer coming there’s just something about shades of blue.
Except, blue is nowhere to be found in our living room right now.
Wait… isn’t there a 90s song by Coldplay called “Yellow” too? Anywho…
The other day, I shared the full blown tour of our new-to-us 1960s brick Colonial. And since we spend so much time in the living room usually, we figured it was the perfect first stop for the makeovering.
For the next couple of days, Robert and I are cranking up our Pandora radio and painting up a storm in the entire downstairs, and I’ll be sharing more about the trim, wall, and door colors we’re using next week.
But I knew from the minute I walked into this space on our first tour of the house that I wanted to make it look clean, crisp, modern yet still classic, and to add a bit of drama.
I just spilled out all of my ideas onto a mood board, and it’s turned out EXACTLY what I hoped for in my head.

It seems a bit more stark in this mood board than I think it will be in person because the wood floors will warm up the space quite a bit. This whole room will be centered around lots of inexpensive changes like simply using paint for high impact, using some decor we already own, utilizing all upholstered furniture from IKEA, and incorporating some thrifted pieces I’ve found recently.
I think it’ll be surprising how little the final price tag will be when it’s all said and done.

Since we sold our sofa and loveseat while moving out of our last house, I’ve been wanting something more kid-friendly. Our last living room set became dirty very quickly, so it’s either slipcovers or shelling out big bucks for Sunbrella interior fabric for me this time around. This sofa and this accent chair were just released at IKEA a few weeks ago, and I’m SO excited about them. They’re slipcovered, but they don’t look frumpy at all. I gave them a sit test on my last trip there, and they were surprisingly comfy. The sofa is much deeper than the more classic Ektorp we have from there. I’m sure I’ll share more about them later if we end up buying them. But I have high hopes.
I’m still debating the ceiling fan, but I’m pretty ga-ga over this one. All of the tables we’ll be using in the room we originally bought from Craigslist or consignment, but I linked to ones similar to what ours look like.
So now I guess we’ll be painting for foreverrrrrr! But it’ll all be very worth it. Can’t wait to see how this one comes together!!!
