Lowe’s Makeover Before and Bathroom Design Plan

It seems like a million years ago since I announced that I would be partnering with Lowe’s to conduct a nationwide search to give one homeowner a makeover this spring.  There were so many applicants to choose from (and so many of you put together the cutest little videos that I absolutely loved watching). Thank you SO much to each of you who took the time to submit your spaces.

It was really hard to decide on only one home because if I could makeover every single one of them, I totally would.  (Oprah wannabe over here- you get a makeover and YOU get a makeover!)

Ultimately, this bathroom that belongs to the Hanusch family ended up having a heap of potential.  Bethany and Levi’s story stuck with me as they originally built this house of theirs on family land when they first got married.  Levi owns his own business as a wedding videographer and is a drummer in a local worship band, and Bethany is just starting her own counseling practice in their hometown near Austin, Texas.

They’re a lighthearted, fun couple (who talk to their pets as if they’re people just like Robert and I do), but their bathroom isn’t really a retreat for them.

This master bathroom of theirs is so much like what Robert and I worked with in our last house.  It’s nice, but it’s very basic and could use some wow-factor.  Their style is very much modern farmhouse, so there are a lot of quick cosmetic changes in this space that could make that happen for them. (If you want some ideas for your own house, I rounded up a lot of solutions you can do in this post.)

So I put together a quick design board to help envision what this bathroom could become.  We’ll be painting the walls a more muted cool gray to give the space an airy open feeling, but we’ll still be incorporating color in the vanity with a deep, rich blue.

Bethany mentioned that she loves the industrial shower door look, so we’ll be switching out their existing one for one that looks like a factory window. We’ll be adding texture with wood elements on the walls and mirror frame, and the basic light and plumbing fixtures will be switched out for more modern-meets-vintage style ones in bronze finishes to make them pop.

To soften the space from some of the masculine features, we’ll be incorporating lots of botanical art (my fave!), and the floor will have a subtle light gray pattern (more subtle than depicted in this design board with light gray and white instead of black).

If it turns out like I see it in my head, it’s going to be really gorgeous.  So in a couple of weeks, right before closing on the new house, Robert and I, along with our team of DIY bloggers, will be jetting off to Austin, Texas to make it happen.  We’ll be sharing all kinds of sneak peeks along the way on my Instagram stories, so you can follow along over there if you want to see the shenanigans first hand.

Are you seeing the potential too?! I’m dying over here!
