A couple of weeks ago, I got the best kind of mail, a bouquet of flowers delivered to my doorstep.
I’m telling you, I think this particular bouquet of flowers knew that I’d been trying to think up something creative for a Valentine’s Day printable since I knew I’d be teaming up with some talented blogger friends today along with Abby from Just and Girl and Her Blog for a quick Valentine’s Printable bloghop.
But before it arrived, I was coming up empty. (Those creative juices are just funny like that; some days I have a million great ideas, and others it’s like my brain is just rattling around up there.)
So I pulled that sweet bouquet out of its shipping box, laid it on our kitchen counter while I looked for a vase, turned back around, and voila. This picture-perfect art idea. So I grabbed my camera and snapped a shot of this bouquet of flowers in the exact shape of a heart.
Can you see it?! Totally unplanned.
I am not an artist by any means. I draw stick people. Seriously.
But in the past three years, photography has somehow worked its way deep into my heart. It’s taken practice and studying and a lot of trial and error (and I’m still far from being a master photographer), but it’s taught me so much about life.
Like how finding happiness is a matter of taking a minute to be grateful for what’s already around you…
… how there’s always something extraordinary about the every day.
There are some days when I’m so caught up in to-do lists and schedules and emails and ballet lessons and meal plans and news stories that photography saves me. I’ll be riding in the car and suddenly a rosy sunset will catch my eye. Or Olivia will be giggling, blowing bubbles in the backyard. Or Robert will give me the same look that he did on our very first date. And I take a mental photograph.
It makes me fall in love with life, with the beauty that we’re sometimes so wrapped up in other things to really see. But, man, it’s a pretty spectacular romance when you stop everything to actually LOOK at those little moments that often last only a split second, those moments that are worth everything in the entire world.
I think that bouquet of flowers knew I needed that reminder, to step away from the text messages and dirty laundry that day to just be. To just see the little things. To just love being alive.
