DIY Birch Bark Vase

Today is quite literally a trash to treasure day.  Borderline dumpster diving.  I don’t really go lurking in alleys to paw through garbage in hopes of finding decor, but our own trash can? Sure, why not.

Because it’s totally normal to walk into your pantry one day, see an oatmeal can, and think, “That would make an amazing vase!”  Nope. Nothing weird at all about that.

Yesterday, when I shared our living room and mantel decked out for post-Christmas winter, I didn’t really get around to mentioning my steal of a birch bark vase.  When I was wandering around the after-Christmas clearance aisle a couple of weeks ago, I found this really cute roll of embossed birch bark printed wrapping paper.  For less than 2 dollars!

The little oatmeal can waiting for it at home in our kitchen was just destiny.  (Really, this isn’t the first time I’ve covered “trash” with paper to make it into home decor.)

Prepare yourself for the easiest DIY ever in the history of this blog…

Supplies Used:  (Affiliate links are provided below for convenience.)

  • Birch bark wrapping paper (I found mine for under $2 here, but since it might be out of stock soon, you can buy it on Amazon or Etsy too.)
  • Oatmeal can (or any other cylinder- a Pringles can or coffee can could work as well.)
  • Scissors
  • Double sided tape

I laid the oatmeal can on its side on top of the wrapping paper cut the paper about half an inch wider than the can’s length.

On one edge of the cut piece of wrapping paper, I placed a line of the double sided tape.

Then just rolled the can into place on top of the tape and pressed.

I rolled the can down the length of the paper and attached the other edge with double sided tape too.

Like a cute little birch bark burrito.

From there, I just trimmed the bottom edge of the can, and at the top of the can, I pressed the excess paper down around the opening with a bit more tape.

Ta da!  Almost looks like the real thing you’d find in boutiques, huh?  And it took all of 5 minutes.  It would be so pretty and inexpensive to make a whole bunch of them for a wedding.  The only thing is, you’d need fake flowers or at least a real glass vase inside the oatmeal can.

I love that it can really be used any time of year, but it definitely has that cozy winter vibe going on right now.

Have you ever turned any actual trash into home decor treasure before?  Or wrapped something in paper to give it a whole new life?  Maybe I need to raid our pantry more often.
