How We Save Mulah on Clothing

I have this theory… The less I can spend on groceries / cable / clothing / the bare necessities, the more I can spend on home decor and DIY projects.  I’ve come to terms with my obsession. Coupon clipping = pretty, new throw pillows.

I’ve shared before how we save money on our everyday budget, and after mentioning that I used an online consignment site called thredUP to shop for clothes, I found out many of you had never heard of it. Gasp! 

Y’all.  Maybe I shouldn’t tell you about it because you will legitimately be hooked forever and just want to sit and shop online all the time.  (But there’s a discount at the end of this post, so that makes it better, right?)

One of my favorite things to do on a random afternoon is visit my local thrift stores to find great furniture to refinish, but when it comes to the clothing racks, I walk right past them.  Mostly because I don’t usually have the patience the dig through racks and bins of sometimes smelly, often ripped and dirty clothing that’s hardly worth the effort.

But since Olivia is usually tagging along when I’m shopping for clothes for myself and tries to crawl under dressing room stalls, I’m all “online shopping for the win” over here.

Whenever I feel like clothes shopping now, I pop over to the thredUP site, search my size, and pick secondhand designer clothes that are in excellent or like new condition.  Their inventory changes every day, so I like checking out what they’ve added on the regular.

A few days after checkout, the goodie box arrives.  It comes wrapped so nicely with everything perfectly folded. (Lola didn’t get any puppy fashion in it though… sad face.)

And the clothes are tagged, so even though they’re technically not new, they still feel new. Some of the items came with the store tags still on them too though.

I got Olivia a few outfits to start her off for back-t0-school this year.

These pink Baby Gap jeans were $35 retail and I got them on thredUP for $9.  And her chambray Carter’s shirt was $26 retail and I got it for $7.

This pink/red floral H&M shirt was $4 marked down from $10 and jeans were $5 marked down from $13.

This outfit ended up being her favorite- a blush skirt for $5 marked down from $19 and an Olive Juice boutique brand sweater for $8 marked down from $43.  She looks like a little Audrey Hepburn in this getup! I can’t stand the cuteness!

The good thing is if anything ends up not fitting well, I can send it right back and it’s completely free shipping.

I picked up a big haul of clothes too since my wardrobe mostly consists of paint splattered yoga pants. And the whole lot of them was full of brands I’m hardly ever able to afford otherwise.

I’ve struggled a little bit with my weight ever since Olivia was born and have just recently gotten back on track, so most days I just throw on a T-shirt and jeans.  It feels amazing to treat myself with new clothes on the rare occasion though.  And if I can spend less on them, I don’t feel guilty.

I’m no fashion blogger or model AT. ALL.  But my size 8, mom bod self had fun in front of the camera for a quick fashion show.

Outfit 1:  I LOVE this outfit!  It’s going to be perfect transitioning from summer into fall.  I got the Aldo brand lace cardigan for $35 ($119 retail).  The Old Navy skinny jeans were $10 ($35 retail).

Outfit 2: I almost didn’t buy this funky top, but I’m so glad I did.  It’s so different from what I’d normally choose from the rack and the fringe is a lot of fun.  I paid $10 for it ($30 retail).  And the pink cords from Ann Taylor Loft were $18 ($70 retail).  The gray suede Diesel booties were $22 ($167 retail WOAH!)

Outfit 3: I couldn’t resist this pretty dress for a fancy date night with Robert or a wedding that might pop up sometime in the near future.  It’s from Ann Taylor Loft and cost me $17 ($80 retail).

Outfit 4:  I fully plan on rockin’ this cardigan in the preschool pickup line that I got for $25 ($89 retail) and these Old Navy jeans I got for $8 ($35 retail).

Outfit 5:  If we end up going to any football games this fall, this Neiman Marcus cardigan is definitely coming with me.  I paid $40 and it was originally $240! WHAT?!  Not in this lifetime.

Outfit 6:  I picked up this lightweight Gap blouse for $14 ($45 retail) and Ann Taylor silk scarf for $26 ($89 retail) for those warm Southern fall days.  Our weather gets really confusing this time of year, so it’s lightweight layers all the way around here.

If you’re in the mood to do a closet purge, you can sell your clothes on thredUP too. I haven’t tried it yet, but I have a big pile of office style clothing from my teaching days calling my name.  To declutter and clean out your closet, you can order a Clean Out Bag, fill it with items you want to sell, place the bag outside of your front door for pick-up, and wait for your payout.

If the day ever comes that we decide to have another baby, I’ll definitely be getting all of my maternity clothes from this site.  I wish it had been around when I was pregnant with Olivia.

So yay for ditching the stained gym clothes and pajamas in public!  (Okay, I wasn’t quite as bad as pjs in public, but it was getting really close.)
