This might be a total “psyche” moment with today’s makeover. Last week, I shared with y’all some big ideas I’ve had swirling around about our playroom design and living room changes. But then… sometimes there’s that unexpected project that drops in my lap.
Usually, that unexpected project is a neglected piece of furniture that’s been completely overlooked at my neighborhood thrift store. Feast your eyes on this lovely shade of Pepto Bismol.
And the Hello Kitty stickers are the pièces de résistance. (Bless it’s little heart. I know some precious girl once loved it.)
This media cabinet looked like it had been sitting on the furniture floor for quite a while since it had price tags with 3 markdowns stuck on top of each other. But with those cute shutter doors, it had so much potential to become a cottage style cabinet.
Olivia was so excited when I unloaded it from our truck, and I didn’t have the heart to tell her that Hello Kitty was going bye-bye very soon. So I ripped those stickers off while she wasn’t looking and hoped she wouldn’t recognize this cabinet after a few coats of paint.
Really though… I don’t think I’d recognize the after of this cabinet either.
Supplies Used: (Affiliate links are provided below for convenience. For more information, see my full disclosure here.)
- Fusion Mineral Paint in Algonquin
- Fusion Mineral Paint in Casement
- 1.5″ Angled Purdy Brush
- Vaseline
- Glass Knobs (similar)
I was a bad, bad blogger and didn’t really photograph the makeover process this time (you know… since all evidence of the Hello Kitty massacre had to be destroyed to keep my three year-old from disowning me).
But the process was pretty simple. I just brushed the Algonquin color on all of the edges, corners, and details and let dry. Then, I rubbed a coat of Vaseline over the Algonquin and followed with three coats of the Casement color. Once the last coat of the Casement paint was dry, I wiped away the Vaseline spots with a clean, dry rag to reveal a little of the Algonquin underneath for some subtle distressing.
I love using Vaseline on pieces that aren’t wood because it makes distressing furniture so easy without any sanding required. And as much as I like pink, I really didn’t want it showing through the distressing under the white, and sanding would cause that to happen.
My fellow DIYer mom happened to have a few extra glass knobs that she let me steal from her stash to give it a little feminine touch. She picked them up at TJ Maxx for $1 each, but I found similar ones here.
I know it’s supposed to be a TV stand and hold a cable box in this space in the top, but I kind of love it as a foyer table with books displayed inside too.
And some summer decor along with a thrifted clock dome that I’ve repurposed into a cloche.
I still plan on keeping our charcoal gray foyer table, but I couldn’t resist rescuing this one. (For those of you who have asked, I just post random pieces that I makeover and don’t plan on keeping on my local Craigslist whenever the furniture flipping bug hits me. It’s pretty much just for fun when I’m in the furniture rescuing mood and I have a wild hair of inspiration.)
Another lesson in the books to prove that paint is magical at transforming just about anything, don’t ya think?
